A Mac Error Message States There Is No Camera Connected. What Does This Mean?
Most of the time, the error “no connected camera” means that there is a software problem rather than a hardware problem, and that can be fixed quite easily. It could be that an application that was using the camera still appears to be using it, or it could be that the app that wants to use it doesn’t have the necessary permission.
The camera might not be used if Screen Time is preventing it from being used. The green light that indicates the camera is being used may flash if there’s a hardware problem. It’s a good idea to contact Apple if that happens.
When The Camera Doesn’t Work, Here’s What To Do
The first thing to look out for is that the app you are trying to use with the camera is up to date. You should check that the app has permission to use your camera.
When you have a problem like a camera not working on your Mac, the first thing you should do is to make sure that both macOS and the application you are using are up to date.
Click on the Apple menu, choose About this Mac, then Software Update, if you want to check macOS. If you downloaded the app from the App Store, you can check if there is an update by going to the Store and finding it. If not, click on the application’s name in the menu bar and choose check for updates.
You can choose System Preferences by clicking on the Apple menu. You can choose from the Security & Privacy section. The Privacy tab is located on the left side of the screen. Click the camera in the sidebar to view it.
If the box next to the application is not checked, you won’t be able to use it. It’s possible that you have to quit the application and reopen it to use the camera. If that is the case, you should do that.
If you use CleanMyMac X, you can check the camera permission for applications. The advantage of using CleanMyMac X to do it is that it is very easy to grant or deny permission for lots of different apps and features in one go.
CleanMyMac X’s Maintenance module can be used to run tasks that can fix a lot of problems on your Mac, including issues with the camera. You don’t have to pay for it to be downloaded here.
Turn Off Screen Time
Screen Time may be preventing the camera from being used. If you don’t use Screen Time, the options below will be greyed out and it won’t be the cause of the problem.
The Screen Time pane is located in the System Preferences section. Click Continue if that’s what you’re prompted to do. The next window has a sidebar where you can choose Content & Privacy.
The box next to the camera can be checked in the Allow section. The app limits can be found in the sidebar. Make sure that the box next to Limits is not checked if there is an app in the list that you need to use with the camera.
Reset The SMC
If you have an Intel-based Mac, you might be able to fix the problem by setting the system management chip. If you have a desktop Mac with a T2 security chip, a MacBook with a T2 chip, or a Mac without a T2 chip, there is a method for resetting the SMC. On Apple’s website, you can find detailed instructions.
If you see a message telling you that there is no connected camera on your Mac, it’s likely to be alarming.
Enable Your Camera With Terminal
It’s possible that your camera was in use by an app that didn’t quite properly for the new app to use the webcam. If you need to quit the process, you may need to use Terminal.
Open the app through Finder > Applications > Utilities > Terminal and type in the respective commands:
sudo Killall VDCAssistant
The VDCAssistant process helps run the camera and this one stops it. The admin password was required for the command to be applied. You can type it in when prompted by the terminal.
You can also try:
sudo killall AppleCameraAssistant
This might be limited to OS X, but the process was not recognized on our Big Sur macOS.
Simply Restart Your Mac
If quitting apps didn’t help, there might be a chance that some processes are using the camera in the background. It is almost certain that a restart will resolve the issue and give you full access to the camera once again. If you want to restart your Mac, you have to do this.
- Select the Apple icon in the top menu bar
- Click Restart
You can restart M1 Macs by pressing the Apple menu > restart.
Force Quit Does Not Work With Facetime On Mac
It takes time and stops everything you are doing to make a restart effective. Which isn’t an option when you are in the middle of an important call. If you don’t have a Mac you can use a trick that doesn’t require a restart to fix the problem. The command line is being used to shut down the process.
If prompted, click inside the terminal window, type kill all VDCAssistant Hit Return, and enter your admin password. If the issue of the webcam not working on Mac is solved, you should launch the app again.

Reset Your Mac’s System Controller
If the camera on Mac isn’t working still and nothing else seems to help, it’s possible to reset the System Management Controller. The SMC manages a lot of hardware functions on the computer, so rebooting your Mac may serve as a solution to your problems.
To Reset The SMC On MacBook (2017 or earlier):
Hold down the Shift + Control + Options keys and the power button at the same time and allow 30 seconds to pass before releasing the keys, which will boot the Mac up again.
Resetting the SMC on a modern MacBook Air or Pro with the T2 security chip involves a different two-step process. Sometimes completing the first step will resolve the problem, but proceeding with both is generally a more solid approach for fixing the camera not working on MacBook issues.
The First Thing You Need To Do Is Reset The SMC On The Macbooks
Shut down your Mac and hold the power button for 10 seconds, then release the power button and wait a few more seconds, then turn the Mac on again.
It is possible to check to see if the Mac webcam still works. If the issue doesn’t go away, then you should proceed to the second part.

After the computer has been turned off, you can press and hold the Shift, Option, and Control keys for seven seconds. Then press and hold the power button for seven more seconds.
Wait a few more seconds and release all of the keys at the same time. The power button needs to be pressed to start the Mac. The problem with the MacBook Pro camera should be resolved by now.
